The Messi Transfer Saga
It was on August the 26th when the whole world went into shock after Messi dropped a bombshell, officially submitting his transfer request. This one action led to an internet meltdown. Within 12 hours of his transfer request "Messi transfer" became the most searched phrase on Google overtaking corona as the most searched topic that day. Messi's transfer led to 10 Million tweets and just to give you a comparison as to how big a number that is there were only 800 thousand tweets when Ronaldo decided to leave and when that is considered to be big this is humongous. People always associate Messi as a one team player as he has repeatedly said he would like to finish his career at barca which is why it came as such a surprise when he officially released his statement saying he wants to leave.
So why did Messi want to leave? Its simple. He's fed up at here at Barcelona. He has been carrying the team far too many times and it always comes down on his shoulder to salvage the day. Not only this, he is furious that Barcelona keep bottling in the champions league. A 4-1 victory in the first leg and then Barca go bottling it with a 3-0 loss away in 2018. A 3-0 victory in the first leg and Barca lose 4-0 away to a injury festered Liverpool side. But the tip of the iceberg was Barcelona's 8-2 humiliation against Bayern Munich. He said enough is enough he wasn't going to spend the remaining 3-4 good years where he would be at the top at a club going in decline. To add fuel to the fire Barcelona president with whom Messi has never had a great relationship with, went ahead and terminated his best mate Luis Suarez's contract. Bartomeu the Barcelona president is disliked immensely as it was during his tenure that Neymar left, he signed unnecessary players with huge price tags and ultimately has driven the club to near bankruptcy. This was the last straw for Messi. Either Batromeu leaves or he does and there were no signs of his departure which is why Messi dropped the bomb shell. You would expect a club where Messi has played for the last 15 years, a club which he gave over 50 trophies to, a club that wouldn't be this big without him would facilitate his transition and help him in the next stage of his journey. But it wouldnt be a Barca under Bartomeu if they did the right thing now would it. Barcelona came out saying he will not be able to leave since he did not inform them in July. The clause was Messi must submit his wish to leave before the season ended which he did as the season only ended for Barcelona in mind August but Barcelona's board decided to be petty and play dirty. They even got La liga on their side, with La Liga officially announcing Messi wont be allowed to leave and they did that for the obvious reason to keep the best player in the world and maintaining its stance as the 2nd best league in the world. This was going to be a battle in the court when Messi after 10 exhausting days decided to surrender saying he would never take a club that has given him everything to court and that due to family reasons he will stay put at barca. It was as if he was trapped at the club as shown in his first few performances this season.
And so now the drama was over Messi was to stay at barca for another season. But letting this incident get so big and out of hand everyone started questioning Batromeu and after 2 months of constant protests Bartomeu was finally forced to step down. This Messi will surely take as a win and it might inspire him to get back to the same excellency and heights of football we have seen Messi at. And not to be too optimistic this might just mean Messi might stay at Barcelona for the coming years too after all.
